Blocking Set 1

Delayed Sword

Standing naturally, step back with your left foot toward 6:00 into a right neutral bow facing 12:00 while simultaneously executing a right inward block to the right inner wrist of your opponent. At the same time position your left hand at solar plexus level as a precautionary check against further action.

Immediately slide your right foot back into a cat stance.

Without hesitation deliver a right front snap ball kick to your opponents groin

Plant your right foot forward into a right neutral bow facing 12:00 to check your opponent's right knee, as you deliver a right outward handsword strike to  the right side of your opponents neck. Remember to maintain the position of your left hand as a precautionary check. Immediately slide your right hand to the right wrist of your opponent as a precautionary check.

Orange belt technique

Orange Belt

This technique is essentially the first  technique involving the 'flashing hands' of Kenpo.  Every beginners favourite technique.

Five Swords (against a Front right step through hook punch)

While standing naturally with feet together, step forward and slightly to your left (to 11 o'clock) with your right foot (into a right neutral bow) and deliver a right inward chop to inside of opponent's right punch to bicep using your left hand to simultaneously chop the lower wrist.  .
Immediately strike to opponent's right neck with your right outward chop.
Left finger thrust (palm down) to opponent's eyes as your right hand cocks to your right hip.
With left hand now guarding horizontally and open (palm down), deliver a right uppercut to opponent's solar plexus as you pivot to a right neutral bow immediately 'trampoline' your left hand off your right arm delivering a chop to neck as you step around.  You should finish in a twist stance.
Come out of twist stance while delivering a downward chop to back of opponents neck.
Cover out.

Purple belt techniques

Purple Belt

The more training in Kenpo you the more you will realise the emphasis that is placed on attacking joints and vital areas in order to subdue an attacker.  The logic being if they cannot mechanically function they cannot attack you, this would be an important factor if you were to attacked by perhaps a drunk person or person on drugs.  This technique 'Snapping Twigs' incorporates a technique to disable your opponents arm very effectively

SNAPPING TWIG (front left attempted grab)
Standing with feet together, drop back with your left foot (to 6 o'clock) into a right neutral bow as you simultaneously hook in (to your left) with the heel of your right palm to outside of opponent's left elbow joint while hooking in (to your right) with the heel palm to the inside of your opponent's left inner wrist  to cause an elbow break.
Have your right hand (while forming the shape of a crane) hook opponent's left arm towards you using friction while simultaneously executing a left thrusting chop (palm down) directly to the throat of your opponent; this is done as you shuffle forward with a push drag maneuver. Without any loss of motion continue the counter clockwise motion of your right hand so that the knuckles of that hand execute an inward diagonal rake across the bridge of opponent's nose in order to cause a break.

3. Continue the same counter clockwise motion of your right arm and execute a right inward horizontal elbow strike to opponent's left jaw as your left heel of palm strikes to opponent's right jaw thus creating a brace and sandwiching your opponent between the 2 simultaneous strikes.

Blue belt technique

SHIELD AND MACE (front straight step through right punch)
With feet together, move forward and to your left with your left foot (to 11 o'clock) into a left neutral bow as you immediately pivot to your right into a horse and deliver a right vertical outward block outside of opponent's right arm while simultaneously delivering a left straight punch to opponent's right ribcage.
Pivot to your left and  strike down with a right hammer fist (with your left hand guarding) to upper part of opponent's right kidney
Circle your left hand clockwise, pinning opponent's right arm down as your right hand circles counterclockwise striking opponent's face and eyes with a right handsword.
Circle your right hand counterclockwise and down even further, and strike back of opponent's right knee with your right heel of palm to buckle his leg.
Follow-up with a right knife-edge kick to back of opponent's left knee.

Cover out sharply.

Green belt informaton:-

Green Belt

Introduction:-

Speed is one of the key ingredients in your development toward Green Belt.  Mr. Parkers quote 'He who hesitates meditates in a horizontal position' is an indication of how speed can work for you or against you.  The quote 'to beat action, meet action' confirms the merits of the use of speed.  It is important, therefore, that speed be stressed in all of the Green belt material.  While the purple belt material required developing coordination on both right and left sides, and the blue stressed fluidity and continuity of motion, the green belt material capitalizes on speed.  Following this introduction there is a section on speed which contains a wealth of information that you should scrutinize.

Remember! Do not be enticed to advance your study of the art prematurely.  When you learn a new idea, you are responsible for developing it to an acceptable level before graduating to another plateau of learning.  The amount of time and work you put into this is up to you, but the results must satisfy the standards.  Therefore, practice with understanding.  Know the how, what and why of what you practice.

Learning Kenpo at this stage should be easier for you.  It is the proper application of Kenpo that requiresmore dedicated effort on your part.  You must develop a positive and unconquerable attitude, become more persistent, constantly aware of detail, more flexible, quicker, stronger, more intense, as well as assert greater control of your emotions.  You must be realistic in your approach and be able to apply your art with maximum effectiveness.

Basics should reflect your basic understanding of the concepts of and principles of technique movement.  Mentally, physically, and emotionally your actions should be Directionally harmonized.  When executing your forms, you should move with speed and clarity of motion.  Your attitude should be confident and inspiring.

Some of the prerequisites for green belt:-

you are responsible for knowing and being able to execute all of your yellow, orange, purple and blue belt material.

Know the Alphabet of the Association Patch.

Know the Anatomy for Green belt.

Be able to explain the terminology and give examples to clarify the meaning of the terms

Be able to execute your basics with speed and accuracy

Develop your own form with at least 15 techniques.

Increase your logic of self defense by thoroughly dissecting each technique through the three points of view

Spar 3 versus 1

Add the basic falls into your vocabulary of motion - Back Fall, Side Fall, Front Fall, Rolling falls (front and back)

Green belt sayings

"Accuracy must accompany speed, it requires both to secure victory"

"Although belt colours show, it is no proof that you know!"

"When a mans mind is occupied with his own injury, he is not apt to think of retaliation"

"Principles of motion take precedent over the sequence of motion"

The following is a breakdown of a technique on the green belt syllabus

Taming the Mace (front right step through punch with a wall behind you)

1. While standing naturally, step toward 11 o'clock with your left foot into a left neutral bow as you execute a left inward parry on the outside of your opponents right punch.  As you parry, deliver a right inward handsword to the inside of your opponents right biceps.

2. Immediately have your left hand check and grab your opponents right hand at the wrist, as you deliver a right outward back knuckle strike to your opponents right temple.  This should drive your opponents head back.

3. Have your right hand grab your opponents right shoulder.  Anchor your elbows, pulling your opponent down to cancel his height zones, as you simultaneously bring him forward, hugging him up close to your body to nullify his depth zones.

4. With both of your hands grasping your opponent, keeping your arms in close to you and with your elbows bent, have your left foot step back toward 4.30 into a right neutral bow (facing 10.30).  Immediately pivot counterclockwise.  During this action bend your knees while gradually descending, slam your opponent against the wall.

5. As your opponents back slams against the wall, deliver a right knee kick to your opponents groin.  Simultaneously, with this action execute a right inward elbow strike to your opponents throat, sandwiching your opponent against the wall.  Your opponent should fall to the ground.  Start running if he doesn't!

6. Replant your right foot back toward 12 o'clock.  Execute a left front crossover and cover out twice toward 10.30

Brown belt:-

3rd Brown Belt

Introduction:-

Power is one of the key ingredients in your development toward third degree brown belt.  If you have trained regularly and intelligently, generating power at this level should come easily to you.

It is not the aim of kenpo to merely produce a skillful as well as powerful practitioner, but to create a well integrated student respectful of all.

as a brown belt you will have reached an advanced stage of training.  you should have read as much as possible from Mr.. parkers writings.  now, more than ever, you must be a positive example to your fellow students.  others will be looking to you for guidance and training.  you must train regularly, diligently and with intensity.  in order to do and explain Mr.. parkers system, you must be able to intellectually and intuitively understand its simplicity and its sophistication.

your basics should reflect your new understanding of the concepts and principles of technique movement.  power should emanate as a result of the integration of those concepts and principles.

Some of the prerequisites for third degree brown belt:-

you are responsible for knowing and being able to execute all of your yellow, orange, purple, blue and green belt material.

"you must earn what you learn"

"mastery of the art comes when the tiger is seen but the dragon prevails"

The following is a breakdown of a technique on the brown belt syllabus

Falcons of Force (against Flank left and right shoulder grabs by two men)

1. standing naturally and flanked by 2 men grabbing your shoulders, have your right foot step toward 3 o'clock into a horse stance toward your opponent at your right flank (now referred to as opponent 1).  As you step pin your opponents left hand with your left hand.  simultaneous with this pin execute a right outward handsword to his throat. this should cause opponent 1 to stumble back and temporarily delay him.

2. immediately have your right foot step toward 11.30 into a right neutral bow, as your right hand checks the right hand of opponent 2.  without pause in your action, pivot counterclockwise into a left neutral bow (facing 7.30) as your left hand executes a left outward handsword to the throat of opponent 2.  this strike should cause opponent 2 to stumble back and temporarily delay him.

3. as opponent 1 delivers a right step through punch toward your head, have your left foot step back counterclockwise toward 10.30 into a right neutral bow, execute a right inward block to the inside of his right arm.  Your left hand positionally checks at your solar plexus.

4. Execute a right front ball kick to the groin of opponent 1.  Your opponent should bend over at the waist.

5. plant your right foot forward gauging the distance between both of your opponents.  Left rear crossover and execute a right thrusting back heel kick to the solar plexus of opponent 2.  This kick should stun your opponent as well as drive him away.

6. from  the point of contact of your kick execute a right front crossover toward 1.30.  change your angle of departure by switching into a left neutral bow facing 6 o'clock.  (your left rear foot moves to the front toward 1.30, shallow step, before your right forward foot moves to the rear toward 12.00)

7. Survey

8. with opponent 1 off balance, but still standing and within range, execute a right spinning stiff legged sweep to his right leg.  finish your sweeping action in a left neutral bow (facing 6 o'clock)

9. Survey

10. left front crossover, and cover out twice in the direction of 10.30, completing your action midway between both opponents.
